Ingredients

  • A chopping board and knife

Method

  1. Wash the rice in cold water and soak it for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker or pot and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.
  3. Add onions and green chillies and sauté until onions turn translucent.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and garam masala powder. Mix well and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  6. Add drained rice and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until the rice is coated well with the tomato mixture.
  7. Add water and salt to taste. Mix well and cover the pressure cooker or pot with a tight-fitting lid.
  8. Cook on medium heat for 2 whistles in a pressure cooker or for 20-25 minutes in a pot. Turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally.
  9. Open the lid and fluff the rice with a fork. Serve hot with papad and raita.

  • You can add vegetables like peas, carrots, and beans to make the dish more nutritious.
