Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 12 large cabbage leaves
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Frying pan
  • Baking dish

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the cabbage leaves and cook for 2-3 minutes, until softened. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the ground beef to the pan and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cooked rice, beaten egg, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Place a cabbage leaf on a cutting board and cut out the tough stem at the bottom of the leaf. Place a spoonful of the beef and rice mixture onto the center of the leaf and roll it up, tucking in the sides as you go. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and beef mixture.
  7. Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in a baking dish.
  8. In a separate bowl, mix together the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Pour the sauce over the cabbage rolls in the baking dish.
  9. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, until the cabbage rolls are tender and the sauce is bubbly.
  11. Serve hot with extra sauce spooned over the top.
