Ingredients

  • 2 cups of basmati rice
  • 500g of prawns, peeled and deveined
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons of ginger paste
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
  • 1 cup of plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • 2 cups of water
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Method

  1. Start by washing the rice until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for about 30 minutes.
  2. In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and fry until golden brown. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the ginger paste, garlic, green chilies, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and red chili powder. Add the prawns to the mixture and mix well. Set aside.
  4. In the rice cooker, add the soaked rice along with 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Cook the rice until it is almost done.
  5. In a pot, heat some oil and fry the prawns until they turn pink. Remove the prawns from the pot and set aside.
  6. In the same pot, add the tomato paste and fry for a few minutes. Add the yogurt and mix well.
  7. Add the fried onions to the pot and mix well. Add the cooked prawns to the pot and mix well.
  8. Layer the prawn mixture over the cooked rice in the rice cooker. Cover the rice cooker and cook for another 10-15 minutes until the biryani is fully cooked.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
